When home appliances manufacturer Haier discovered that its customers in Sichuan province were using its washing machines intended for clothes to clean peanuts and sweet potatoes, and therefore were experiencing issues of clogging and general plumbing malfunction, Haier decided to adapt the products to the local market’s specifications. Haier engineers modified the washer design in such a way that met the clients’ specific demands. Today, Haier washers sold in Sichuan province display a label that reads “Mainly for washing clothes, sweet potatoes and peanuts.
